Sustainability is a word that is often heard in the world right now and I got to thinking, what does sustainability mean to me? How does it inform my current business?

As of January 2019, this is how I'm approaching sustainability. I know as the business grows and evolves my approach to sustainability will as well.

Design process.
It all starts with using materials that are high quality even for the samples, I strive to use good, high quality long wearing materials. My desire is to create pieces you will keep and treasure, designs that will stand the test of time. This mindset informs the stones I choose to work with and the metal as well. For metals I will only use solid metals, sterling silver and 14K gold. I will not use plated or filled metals because with heavy use the outer layer of metal comes off leaving the base metal exposed which cannot be easily remedied. The stones I use are of high quality, and if they are treated, it is in a way that will not quickly fade over time.

Production. Currently I only offer made-to-order pieces the beauty of this process is the lack of excess inventory that is not taking up space and using resources. All items are made in Florida, USA, by Laura Clarke .

Testing. I wear test all the designs put into collections to make sure they will wear well over the course of time. So what happens if a piece does not pass the wear test? The design goes back to drawing board where it is tweaked and re-imagined. That newly improved design is then tested again and should it pass it goes into production, and those techniques used. Sometimes a piece does not work out in which case, it gets taken apart and the components reused for a new design.

Packaging. Packaging these pieces in a beautiful yet environmentally friendly way will be a challenge that I am excited to tackle. My primary goal is to figuring out how to source sophisticated packaging that is biodegradable and easily recyclable. These two things that are very important to me and will be where I am going to focus my efforts over 2019.

As the business grows it will change, as a consequence this page, and my approach to sustainability will change. I'm excited for what the future brings and thank you for joining the journey.
